Curtain Call!

As an avid theatre goer, one of my favourite things I look forward to before going to see a show is not only listening to the music, seeing the sets, costumes and beautiful actors - but also viewing the opening stage curtain for the first time. Sure in some shows the curtain doesn't have such a huge part in the overall composition of the show, but in some it can be a dazzling first glimpse at what the show you are about to see unfold is like. Whilst it is incredibly hard to find good quality and accurate photos of the opening curtain, I have done my absolute best to find a few of my favourites from some of the most wonderful and awe inspiring shows. I would finally like to comment that some shows do not use a curtain but are still just as magical. However, in order to stop this list from going on forever, I have limited it to those with creative curtains.

Enjoy!

On the 20th Century 2015

“This is the most elaborate show drop we’ve done. It sets the mood for the show.”

Spiderman Turn Off the Dark

While I am not by any means a fan of this show, I did however love the preshow curtain which offered a perfect into the show about to unfold, similar to that of a comic book cover.

The Lion King Musical

It captures the subject and theme of the show like a glove. Simple but beautiful.

Aladdin the Musical

A magic carpet covers the magic that the audience is about to behold. It screams "be ready for a journey to a whole New World!"

The King and I

I have seen 2 remarkably beautiful productions of 'The King and I', both with different sets and curtain. I did, however, love the new Broadway production.

Mamma Mia

Well, let me start off by saying my favourite colour is blue and if you have seen Mamma Mia, you would know that blue is seen throughout. The curtain of the show is simple but draws my mind to the tranquil Greek Islands.

Beauty and the Beast the Musical

One of my favourite films and one of my favourite productions. The curtain, which has changed over time depending on the production, is detailed, elegant and simply sweet.

Mary Poppins

Whilst this is not the Broadway curtain, I absolutely love the composition of the chimmneys against the blue night sky.

Miss Saigon

I am and always have been a huge fan of this terrific show. The curtain is dark, rustic and dirty, pefectly suitable to the production. One word: brilliant!

Les Miserables

Similar to 'Miss Saigon', this new production of the classic musical offers a haunting and sombre insight into the show and sets the mood perfectly.

Wicked

Who wouldn't love a fantastic map with the glowing Emerald City in the centre? The curtain for 'Wicked' works in perfect harmony with the rest of the show and is beautiful and interesting to look at in the final minutes before the production begins.

The Book of Mormon

Who doesn't like space? The production's curtain blended a myriad of striking colours that rose to darkness with the inclusion of planets which made it out of this world.
